Breast cancer survivor at Sparrow uses art to cope with cancer

Cindy’s Story

Cindy Evans is an artist so it was natural that when she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, she documented her cancer journey through her paintings. Evans visited her doctor for a routine physical in January 2018, where she received the mammogram that detected cancer.

Evans illustrates the questions and fears she had when searching for a cancer team and information on treating breast cancer. She instantly felt the support and comfort from the team at Sparrow.

She says Caregivers at Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center were a big part of the final works of art, including a triumphant painting on her cancer survival. Evans developed different concepts to capture the different phases of cancer treatment at Sparrow.

“The team at the Cancer Center was so positive and so helpful,” Evans says. “I feel like I received the best treatment that I needed to receive.”

Breast cancer meant both physical and emotional loss for Evans, but appreciates the sense of hope her Sparrow cancer team delivered. Sparrow helped restore Evans’ confidence in the future and ability to beat cancer. She calls the nursing staff at the Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center’s infusion center, where she received chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, “awesome and so caring.”

Evans praises the many services and resources provided at Sparrow to support any need in cancer treatment. Emotional support, rides, genetic counseling, cancer clinical trials, and dieticians are a few of the many reasons Patients choose Sparrow’s cancer expertise.

“My future looks pretty good. I call myself a survivor, and that’s what I am.”

The Herbert-Herman Cancer Center features a multi-disciplinary team approach that puts the Patient at the center of everything we do. Patients will see a team of clinicians under one roof and in one visit, rather than making separate appointments with specialists from different practices. Each Patient will receive an individualized treatment plan with input from numerous specialists. Each major cancer has its own clinic, such as breast, lung, and colorectal cancer.

Sparrow is transforming care through innovation such as the region’s only cancer genetics counselor and access to cutting-edge clinical trials. Sparrow’s certified genetics counselor has access to geneticists and counselors from our partners at the Mayo Clinic, when needed. The Herbert-Herman Cancer Center is home to the largest clinical trials program in the region and the only one accepting Phase 1-3 clinical trials not accessible to Patients anywhere else locally.

Sparrow’s comprehensive relationship with Mayo is making a difference in the lives of our Cancer Center Patients every day. Our oncologists participate in eTumor boards with Mayo Clinic cancer specialists daily, discussing and evaluating cases, and Sparrow oncologists consult directly with Mayo surgeons. Mayo second opinions are available to our Patients without the need to travel.
